SEH Commercial let in the light at New Elm Hall Primary School in Essex
The expansion of Elm Hall Primary School to 210 places from 105 has required the construction of a new single story extension to the existing school buildings to provide three new classrooms, an ICT studio, meeting room, storage and staff and ancillary accommodation. Essex County Council education facilities team has also expanded the hard play area and improved access, parking and security features. SEH Commercial has supplied and installed the fenestration and large glazed entrance doors, working in conjunction with main contractor, Barnes Construction of Ipswich.
The window design philosophy for Elm Hall delivers maximum light into the classrooms so that pupils have the best possible learning conditions. The wide, glazed entrance doors and side screens open onto the main double-height assembly area from which the classrooms and other facility rooms radiate.
The new building design mirrors the existing building design and has also matched the original floor levels so that there is no hindrance of movement within the school areas. The pattern of the glazed openings in the existing building has been applied to the full length of the western elevation, while the eastern elevation has larger glazed elements to provide more natural light into the development. The aluminium frames are finished in signal blue to maintain the colour scheme established by the original building.
SEH Commercial have supplied and installed 23 window units including 15 horizontal sliding units and two very tall combination assemblies 2.8 metres tall. This combination features a 2metre high vertical sliding unit with and 800mm deep casement unit above. In addition SEH has installed five screen and door assemblies and a further double leaf commercial access door.
